I have been going to the Western Fair long enough to have opinions about it.

Here is the one that matters. Most people go once, on the busiest Saturday. They buy at the gate. They circle the lot for twenty minutes. They leave at 9pm with a sunburnt kid asleep on their shoulder, wondering why it cost so much.

Almost all of that is avoidable. Two of the fixes are free and the Fair does not advertise either one loudly enough.

This page is built to be the only one you need. The costs. The free transit. What is worth doing. Every official link, so you are not hunting for a schedule in a fifth tab.

HERE’S WHAT WE’LL COVER

  • Do kids and seniors really get in free?
  • What it actually costs in 2026
  • How to get there without dealing with parking
  • Dates and daily hours
  • When to go if you do not like crowds
  • Which rides and which food are worth it
  • What else is on besides the midway
  • What else was on in London in September 2026

1. Do kids and seniors really get in free?

Yes. Both. This is the single most valuable fact on this page and it is the one people miss.

  • Children 10 and under — free. No ticket required at all. Walk in with them.
  • Adults 65 and over — free. Bring photo ID showing your date of birth.

That applies at the gate as well as in advance. So the family everyone pictures — two parents, two young kids — is not buying four tickets. It is buying two.

2. What does the Western Fair actually cost in 2026?

Four ticket types, and the right one depends entirely on the age of your kids. Full current pricing is on the official Western Fair ticket page.

The part nobody does: the group rate

Buying 10 or more? SuperPasses drop to $45 each and General Admission drops to $12. Two families going together clears ten tickets easily — details on the group and corporate rates page. I have never once heard anyone at the Fair mention this.

Which ticket should you actually buy?

  • Little kids who will do Kiddyland and quit after ninety minutes? A $15 General Admission plus a few ride tickets beats a $50 SuperPass.
  • Teenagers? SuperPass, every time. They will ride until you make them leave.
  • Going mainly for the food, the animals and the concerts? General Admission — all shows and exhibits are included.

If money is the main constraint, the Fair publishes its own Fair on a Budget guide, and schools and non-profits can earn back on every ticket through the Fair Share fundraiser.

3. How do you get there without dealing with parking?

You take the bus, and if you have a Fair ticket it costs nothing.

London Transit ran ticket holders free for the entire 2026 Fair — September 11 to 20 — on every route in the city. Full details are in the LTC announcement.

  • Weekdays: free from 1:00 PM to end of service.
  • Weekends: free from 9:00 AM to end of service.
  • How: show the driver your valid Fair ticket, printed or on your phone, when you board.
  • Routes near the fairgrounds: 2, 7, 20 and 94 — but you ride free on all of them. Check LTC real-time or routes and schedules before you leave.

If you are driving anyway: free parking is across the street from the Fair — the District has 4,000-plus free spots, lots open 10AM to 3AM. Accessible parking is in front of the Sports Centre. Weekends fill fast. Directions to the District.

4. When is the Western Fair, and what are the hours?

Gates openBuildings close
Monday – Friday3:00 PM10:00 PM
Saturday & Sunday11:00 AM10:00 PM
Sunday, Sept 1311:00 AM9:00 PM

That Sunday-the-13th early close is the one that catches people out. Anything time-sensitive, confirm on the Fair’s own Things to Know page.

5. When should you go if you do not like crowds?

A weekday, right at the 3:00 PM open. The first ninety minutes of a weekday are the quietest hours the Fair has — before the after-work wave and before the dinner rush. Busiest window, predictably: Saturday afternoon.

And use the $6 Bounce Back. Every admission includes returning for six dollars on another day, however you bought it. Go three hours on a Tuesday, come back Saturday for six bucks. Two short visits beat one long one, every time.

Western Fair — when to go: quietest on a weekday at the 3 PM open, busiest Saturday afternoon

There is healthy competition in our house over the “Who’s Bravest?” title, and the big rides settle it every year.

6. Which rides and which food are worth it?

For little ones — Kiddyland. Fenced, shaded, everything scaled for knee-high explorers. Current lineup and the midway map are on the Midway Rides & Games page.

  • The Classic Carousel — no matter what, we always start here.
  • The Wacky Worm — the first roller coaster most London kids ever ride.
  • The Giant Slide — the burlap-sack one. You will hear the laughing from three rows over.

For older kids and teens:

  • The Polar Express — loud, fast, the one they will talk about on the drive home.
  • The Zipper — has its reputation for a reason. Do not ride it after the elephant ears.

Arrive hungry. The full vendor list is on the Fair Food page, and the Fair maps a Food Trail if you want to eat your way through it properly.

  • Tiny Tom Donuts — follow your nose. They will find you before you find them.
  • Elephant Ears — bigger than your head. One between three people is the correct order.
  • Corn dogs — made in front of you, eaten walking between rides.
  • The church dinner halls — the one nobody outside London knows about. Home-cooked sit-down meals at a fraction of midway prices, and the money goes to local causes.

7. What else is on besides the midway?

  • Free evening concerts at the Bud Light Music Garden — included with any admission. Set times on the same page.
  • Three hockey games at the Sports Centre, $20 each including Fair admission. Opening Night 911 Game (Fri Sept 11). Nationals Home Opener (Sat Sept 12). The NHL Alumni Game (Sun Sept 20). Kids 10 and under and adults 65+ free to all three. Best-value item on the price list.
  • The STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Canadian Championship — competitive lumberjacking. Exactly as good as it sounds.
  • Grandstand motorsports and family shows — both included with admission.
  • The animal barn — the only place in the city your kid can meet a cow.
  • Strolling acts and the Where is Happy hunt — good for keeping small kids moving between rides.

8. What else was on in London in September 2026?

  • Fairway Fest — East Park, September 4–6.
  • Beetlejuice — The Musical — Canada Life Place, September 10 and 12.
  • Doors Open London — September 19–20, the 25th anniversary.
  • London Reggae Festival — Covent Garden Market, September 19–20.
  • London Comic Con — Western Fair Agriplex, September 26–27.
  • September Night Market — Covent Garden Market, September 26 from 3:00 PM.
  • More across the city on Tourism London’s events calendar.

And once the Fair packs up, London rolls straight into autumn.

Here is the 2026 guide to pumpkin patches, corn mazes and fall festivals near London. And here is what to do with the kids at Halloween in London.

Note the pile-up on September 19–20: the Fair’s closing weekend, the NHL Alumni Game, Doors Open’s 25th, and the Reggae Festival. Plan that weekend or lose it.

Win the Western Fair checklist — free admission, free transit, buy before Sept 10, church dinner halls, $6 return

THE HONEST TAKEAWAY

The Western Fair is loud, crowded, and the midway will separate you from your money with real efficiency. That has been the deal since 1868.

Win it anyway: kids under 10 and adults over 65 walk in free. Take the bus — it is free with your ticket. Buy before September 10. Eat at the church dinner halls. Use the $6 return.

The Fair is not expensive. Doing it wrong is expensive.
